The History of Greenewalt Library
Greenewalt Library is a specialized library which focuses on the field of archeology. It was established in 2015 within the department of Archeology at the Faculty of Letters.
Before the Greenewalt Library, there is the department of Archeology Library which is a library within the Greenewalt Library. The establishment of the library dates back to 1997, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tomris Bakır, a retired faculty member of our department, and with the involvement of our faculty member at the time, prof. Dr. Gül Gürtekin Demir, who was also her student and assistant. During those years, a limited number of publications which were available in the department of Archeology are started to be recorded based on the reference system of Ege University Central Library. Following this initial step, faculty members of our department which are Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Cevizoğlu ve Prof. Dr. Yasemin Polat served for many years as the responsible coordinators of the library. After the library became active, thanks to the voluntary contributions of both our department and individuals outside of it,especially Prof. Dr. Greenewalt, the foundations of the library were laid. The Archeology Department Library currently houses nearly four thousand works. Unlike other collections which are preserved without compromising its integrity, publications which belong to the Archeology Department Library continue to grow with new works added to our department.
First steps about the establishment of Greenewalt Library were taken in 2010 with the visit of Prof. Dr. Greenewalt to the Department of Archeology. Following this visit, Prof Dr. Gül Gürtekin Demir and Prof. Dr. Greenewalt planned the library to be established within the Department of Archeology. Over 5.000 archeological publications and various paintings which are placed in his office were donated to the Department of Archeology thanks to Dr. Greenewalt’s covering all expenses. During the establishment of the library, all organization in the U.S. was carried out with the help of Prof. Dr. Nicholas D. Cahill. For the establishment of the library, an infrastructure was prepared under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Gül Gürtekin Demir. With the project, necessary arrangements were made in the designed area of the library. Computers, desks and chairs for recording, searching for publications and studying were purchased. Also a shelving system for storing publications and a camera system for security were purchased. On the other hand, scholarships were granted to students to take part in the recording of works within the scope of the project. During the opening of the library, the dean of the Faculty of Letters Prof. Dr. Ersin Doğer and the Head of the Department of Archeology Prof. Dr. Nurdan Şahin provided great support. During the opening of the library, the project’s co-executive Asst. Prof. Dr. Ümit Güngör and project team members, Research Assistant Ergün Karaca, graduate students Sinem Çakır and Gencay Öztürk, and undergraduate student Hakan Aycan took part in the work.
The Greenewalt Library, which houses a large number of works, primarily includes the various special collections of Altan Çilingiroğlu, Crisler, Himmelmann, Ersin Doğer, Hasan Malay and Tomris Bakır libraries. All collections have been recorded without disrupting their integrity under a bookcase named after the donor and presented for researchers.
Apart from archeological publications, the Greenewalt Library also contains valuable works on subjects such as Ancient History, Ottoman History,Epigraphy, Art History, and Museology. The work includes books, periodicals, journals and rare and antique books dated between the 16th and 19th centuries. Our library has more than 13 thousand works from different disciplines.
