Considering the archeological significance of the Aegean Region,on November 27,1962; an Archeology Institute was established under Ege University and the institute became operational on March 18,1964. Institute didn’t operate a search project on the behalf of its name. In addition, the institute provided personnel for the archeological works of Ankara and Istanbul University, excavation works that are located in the Aegean Region such as Teos,Pitane,Bayraklı and Bodrum supported them financially. The essence of the Archeology Library which is located at Ege University today has been established through the establishment of the institute library. The efforts of the Institute of Archeology also played a role in the organization of ‘’the X. International Congress of Classical Archeology’’ to be held in İzmir in 1973. The first president of the institute is Prof. Dr. Celal Saraç. In 1976, The Institute of Archeology was attached to this faculty with the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences which will be named ‘’Faculty of Letters’’ later and Prof. Dr. Mükerrem Usman Anadolu was assigned as the head. The History-Geography and Archeology Department were established once again under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mükerrem within the faculty at the same date. The academic organization of the Faculty of Literature was restructured on 07.05.1979, and the Department of Archeology has been made an independent department. The Department of Archeology has been divided into two separate departments which are Classical Archeology and Prehistory and Near Eastern Archeology in 1994. Prof. Dr. Tomris Bakır assumed the position of head of the Department of Archeology and the Department of Classical Archeology, while Prof. Dr. Altan Çilingiroğlu assumed the position of head of the Department of Prehistory and Near Eastern Archeology. 
The scope of the program is examining ancient period culture and civilizations and also providing practical experience with the help of both through theoretical courses and through excavations,research, and project work carried out by our faculty members in various regions. Also the scope of the program is raising an archeologist, researcher and academician who has analytical and critical thinking abilities, can do scientific research,and can follow contemporary methods and technologies.
The language of the Department of Archeology is Turkish.
Today the Department of Archeology graduates students in the fields of Classical Archeology,Prehistory and Near Eastern Archeology. The academic year in the Faculty of Arts consists of two semesters, each lasting 15 weeks. Students have a Bachelor's degree by completing all the lessons that are given through 8 periods to graduate and they are entitled to receive the title of archeologist. Students are evaluated by statutory exams,seminar,project and presentations in the department where attendance of 70% of the classes is mandatory. One midterm and one final exam are held in each semester. The date of midterm and final exam are announced by the department. Students who are unable to attend the exam due to valid excuses are granted the right to a make-up exam by the decision of the Faculty Board. Students can attend the excavations that are executed by the department and fieldworks during their undergraduate studies and they can reinforce what they have learned in classes through fieldwork. In the Department of Archeology, where undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs are offered, there are 12 professors, 4 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, 1 lecturer  with a PhD, and 5 research assistants.
